CumGutterSplash Records is an independent American record label founded in 1991 by promoter and producer Burp Yiffer in Newark, New Jersey. The label is widely credited with originating the underground genre known as phlegm-hop, noted for its lo-fi production, cough/sneeze sampling, and grotesque aesthetic. CumGutterSplash is known for provocative packaging, limited pressings, and an outsized cult reputation in underground experimental music.
History
Founding (1991–1993)
The label’s first release was Sir ScreteRot Presents: The Mucus Tapes Vol. 1 (1991), a compilation featuring early tracks by Dildophonics, Stank Ocean, DJ Peepeepoopoo, and MC Lungbutter. Only 200 cassettes were produced; most were stored in a damp crawlspace and became mold-infested, making surviving copies extremely rare.[1]
Golden Era (1994–2001)
Notable releases included Tonsil Stones (1994) by Dildophonics and Cough Syrup Drip (1996) by Pukey Shazam, which achieved college-radio play despite controversy. Collaborative works like Moisture Control EP by Stank Ocean and DJ Peepeepoopoo (1997) helped define the phlegm-hop sound.[2]
Decline and Resurgence (2002–present)
The infamous Mildew Rave (2002) led to Burp Yiffer’s brief detention and the label’s hiatus. In 2018, CumGutterSplash was revived online by anonymous curators, sparking a “neo-phlegm-hop” wave.[3]
Phlegm-Hop (genre)
Phlegm-Hop is defined by lo-fi beats processed through humidifiers and damaged samplers, heavy cough/sneeze/gag sampling, and lyrics centered on sickness, grime, and satire. Underground press once called it “hip-hop recorded inside a tuberculosis ward.”[4]
